Reparations NOW NWA
Reparations NOW NWA is a coalition of black, white, male, female, Christian, and other-than-Christian people in Northwest Arkansas (NWA) whose long-term objective is to practice reparations for black people in NWA.
The long-term objective of Reparations NOW NWA is to practice reparations for black people in NWA. The short-term objectives of Reparations NOW NWA are to (1) conduct research among black people and (2) create support among white people and white churches.
WHEN, WHERE, & HOW
In collaboration with the African and African American Studies Program at the University of Arkansas, we will use focus groups to conduct research among black people. We will host four (4) focus groups in July 2023, October 2023, January 2024, and April 2024. We will ask approximately one hundred (100) black people to create and choose a reparations project in NWA. A task force of six (6) black people will facilitate the focus groups and model support of the reparations project.
In collaboration with KUAF and the Fayetteville Public Library, we will use a podcast and book discussions to create support among white people and white churches. We released four (4) podcast episodes in July 2022. We will host two (2) book discussions with Dr. Jemar Tisby about How to Fight Racism in October 2022 and with Dr. Greg Thompson about Reparations in April 2023. A task force of six (6) white people will facilitate the book discussions and model support of the reparations project.
A joint task force of twelve (12) black and white people will meet six (6) times from January 2023 to April 2024.
I (Lowell) started Reparations NOW NWA because I want white people and white churches in NWA to support a reparations project that black people in NWA create and choose.
